Title: The Eppic OffRoadster
Post by: Eppic on September 18, 2016, 11:08 AM
**Since Photobucket did it's thing you might not be able to see many of the pictures.  If that's the case, try this.  Worked for me.  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...giikdkpmcpkaon
I'm using Imgur now**

Well,  I needed a winter car. There's a whole pile of Miatas around here so I figured it would be easy to slap one together quickly. Well that's quickly turned into a "build a brand new car" build. Everything is getting stripped and refinished.
The plans for this are not just another cool Miata. No no. This will be another Eppic Miata. We say top secret but really, we get too excited and just want to share our creativity with people. Hopefully another week or so of hard work and this new project will be rolling.
Onto the pictures:

Sorting out what parts to use.

Had to move the shell out to sand blast the engine bay. Fastest way to get work done is just do it yourself.

Parts go in the oven to be baked and gassed out before sandblasting and then powdered.

Interior is fully stripped.

And the list continually grows larger and larger.

That's all for now.

Very nice powder coating! I have some brand new raw aluminum M3 components I want coated but the bushings are already pressed in. Can they still be powder coated without taking them out? Also looking to do my rear sub frame and arms in the future.

Rust free Miatas ftw.

I have V8 Roadsters FUCA ball joints to sell if you're interested, as well as Prothane FLCA bushings (I already used the FUCA bushings on my old car)

It is great rust protection but it's only great for that if you sandblast everything down, get rid of all the rust, weld in new metal and rust paint everything first and THEN spray bed liner. If you were to just cover rust with this stuff you would just be containing the rust and letting it eat itself away faster cause you're then containing it.

Seems like it'd be easier to install the struts and upper control arms after you've pressed in the balljoints instead of doing it twice, even though I understand the fun of mocking things up.

Are you keeping the 1.6 or installing a 1.8?

Needed to check clearances for suspensions mods.

Looks like the 1.6 is going in. Josiah has a turbo kit illmprobably throw on there too so it's not so boring...

alright.... here's today progress.  I had to throw the towel in on the sand blasting late afternoon before I was done cause it started snowing.  Figured I'd go start planning where to build and igloo and keep my dog sled...

Crazy how that took 2 hours.  That's just the top half.  Haven't even got to the bottom half where the really gross stuff is.  Tomorrow is going to be another long day of blasting.  But then the hard stuff is over.

Haters gonna hate.  You gotta lay down a good foundation first my friend.  I know it may not seem all that exciting right now.  But that's how building a car goes.  Like painting a car. (we'll get to that yet too)  It's not really that exciting to do the body work but you wouldn't paint a car before fixing all the dents first right?  Patience.  The good stuff is just around the corner.

What did you use between the bare metal and bed liner, in that photo of the floor and I assume also on the rest of the parts that were stripped?

Valspar Anti-Rust Armor.
I use this for the anti-rust factor, resistance to all types of fuels, chemicals and UV exposure. It's a great product for restoring old motorcycles, marine apps and outdoor power equipment, all sorts of stuff.  All the stuff that gets powder coated is just straight to metal.  Powder seals the entire part and doesn't chip and has amazing UV and color protection.

well, It's been a while since I got anything productive done on this guy.  I've been very sick the last week.  Before that I spent a week converting part of my shop into a paint booth for winter, and had a whole lot of yard work and clean up to get done before winter is here, that's life eh.  But alas today I finally got back at er a bit even though I'm still super sick.
Paint is starting to get applied to the parts that will be hydrodipped.  I guess I'll let the secret out...

Camera's and fluorescent don't like each other so these pictures don't do justice. This stuff is BRIGHT!

Today I was busy.  The weather was warm and I got in my groove and before I knew it... this just kinda happened. Not cleared yet.  This is still freshly dipped and rinsed.

Today's compiled list of  activites include...

powder coated rear calipers and all their parts

parts are hunger and ready for clear.  Found out I forgot a couple parts today so lets call this batch #uno (doing that this evening)

And lets see if we can't get these guys installed while clear coat dries on the parts in the booth.

picking up another miata tomorrow evening and then if all goes well, Plan is for the car to be together and running by the end of the weekend.  One last hard push and I should be able to knock out the majority of the work to get it mobile under it's own power again.

This morning began the strip down of the turbo parts miata I picked up last night.  Radar was quick to investigate the interior and sniff out all the curious smells.

Turbo on the other hand here laid claim to this being his car.

which then led to the coolest miata ever.  Twin Turbo with state of the art 12 year old radar navigation system...

It's got an old fm turbo kit and burns oil like mad.  Probably doesn't help that the vent breather is being used as the oil cap...  There's oil EVERYWHERE from that as this engine has some major blow-by.  Lets hope just the engine is toast and the turbo is still good. (not my dog.  He's super good!)

Had some young aspiring lads who want to learn the automotive world come and volunteer to help disassemble this miata.  They may not know a lot or work quickly, but I enjoy teaching them and watching them learn how to work on cars and i find a lot of value in helping someone understand how things on a car work so when their car breaks that have a better sense of what's actually happening.  Gives them a good sense of pride.  :)
This also allows me to get the complex stuff done like reassembling a power steering pump without scratching it as it's been powder coated and hydrodipped.
Bumpers, Doors, seats, and they started on the roll bar before we called it a day.

Sandblasted all these suckers by hand as my parts tumbler from eastwood never showed up.  Then painted them That was tedious.

I was busy working on reassembling calipers and master cylinders and getting things ready on the motor to install.

And throughout the day we pleasantly enjoyed finding a plethora of interesting artifacts the previous owner cared not to remove from his vehicle before selling it...

Tomorrows goals...
-assemble motor completely and install into car
-pull driveline from parts miata and install into built miata
-hook it all up and at least get it running and driving

Snow is imminent any day now.  Gotta push major hard for another week and hopefully knock this thing out the door so I have something to drive.  Body will have to get finished at a later date and work is kinda backing up more and more now that this new work whip is top priority.

Pounded out a bunch more stuff today.  My volunteers showed up again.  They got the roll cage out.

I blasted and painted even more bolts as I realized I needed them for different areas of the car.

And this is where I end the day today.  I had a goal of getting it running but... I spent a ton of time looking for misc gaskets and seals for this that and the other.

And on today's list we have....

One super oiley turbo charged engine and tranny being removed. This engine probably ranks highest on the most oil covered engine I've ever pulled out of a vehicle in the 11 years I've been doing this job.  Previous owner said it burns just a little bit of oil...
The ol not so top secret miata lurkin in the back waiting for parts.

And we have a gold clutch!  Does that mean it's worth more?  Anyone know what them little weights are stuck to the springs?  Aftermarket on the aftermarket to give more clamping pressure?
Bits and bobs being reassembled.  I think I may have painted and dipped the wrong master cylinder resivoir because it's not fitting to well and I've checked the 6 other miata's I have and none of them have a resivoir that looks like that. UGH!

If you punch bolts through the cardboard you can paint the heads evenly without getting paint on the threads. Saves you having to run a die over them all afterwards and you don't have to spray them twice to get both sides. You can setup nuts on spare bolts or threaded rod for the same reason (protecting the threads).
Title: #topsecreteppicmiata
Post by: Eppic on November 19, 2016, 10:39 PM
Spray paint is actually thin enough it doesn't mess with the threads.  Kinda acts as a gentle thread locker really.  The bolts turn in and out by hand no problem.  It more so takes up any slack in the threads. I paint them for that reason.  Call it my own anti-vibration rattle out of place insurance...
Powder coat on the other hand is detrimental to your bolts.  That requires a tap or die.

Grabbing parts as I need them.  Almost done everything underneath the car.  Brake lines are done.  Exhaust is in.  Driveline is in.  Fuel lines in.

The snow came today.  I had to enable the Winter Shark unfortunately. Stretched tires and snow = 5th gear 100km/h burn outs down the highway. :D

Parts everywhere as the build is frantically being assembled.

I keep thinking I'm almost there.  Just this and that left...  Then I add more to my list.  Downside of having ADHD.  In your head your pretty much done, then you go look at your list again and go "oh wait... I forgot this and this and this and this"  BAH!  I just want to drive this thing already.

And I finished fabbing some metal brackets that do things.   Painted them. Now you can watch them dry.  You'll see what those are for later!

Windshield is in.  Didn't get much done on the car today.  After 2 weeks of 16 hour days working on this thing my body finally said "ENOUGH".  I went to eat supper and fell asleep immediately following. (This never ever ever ever happens due to ADHD.)

Looking like we are moving on to interior assembly next.  Then body panels and lights and we call that stage 1 complete.  Maybe by the end of the weekend?

Still needs to be bolted down to pass safety.
Title: The Eppic OffRoadster
Post by: Eppic on November 26, 2016, 10:07 PM
I can't stress this enough to anyone who wants to do a project this big.. double tripple and quadrouple check EVERY bolt on the car before you go anywhere.  Every time I slide under the car I just take a look to see if I missed anything.  Sure enough... I tightened the axle on one side but not the other. (note driveline is temporary and that's why I've left it ugly and dirty.  Upgrades are planned!)

This whole project is a tedious bit as EVERY bolt gets painted with anti-seize.  Takes a whole bunch of extra time.  But at least my bolts won't ever rust.

This is probably the most annoying part of the whole build.  I need these specialized bolts and spacers for this or that and I've done too much work to just "leave them rusty cause you don't see them" so they get blasted and painted.  Just to keep my brain at ease so I can sleep at night knowing I don't have any rusty nuts...

The other thing I'd like to stress for anyone looking to take on a big build like this.  If you're going to drill holes in your car, PLEASE SEAL THE HOLES!  all your work is just going to go down the tubes if you don't seal your fresh metal!  Left over windshield urethane goes into each hole to seal it off from the out door elements.  Caution though... urethane is the stickiest and dirtiest substance in the known world.

26 years of dust build up, it was time for a good ol cleaning behind the dash.

Had some help today from Radar.  He may have been slightly confused as seats are normally in cars and if he's on a seat in a car, that means he's going for a car ride and car rides mean excitement....  Never the less, he still manages to get all my seats dirty.

Found me a super good deal on a set of used tires.  Picking them up in a couple days.  Happened to have one the same size here so I was curious how much cutting needs to be done for the first stage of this offroadster.

Today's progress.

Body panels are starting to go on.  I promise I'm not trying to make it as many colors as I can.

Cleared my wheels today.

And I just couldn't resist touching them.  Not cured enough to mount tires but enough to see that the red looks hideous next to that brightness.  I may end up just spray painting that quickly for the time being.  Yuck.

Full droop before some cutting happens....

And I seem to be having problems with my brake master.  Not getting any fluid to the rear.  Spent the whole evening trying to figure this out.  Didn't track it down yet.  Probably get there tomorrow.

Interior slowly getting put together.  Ended up just hard wiring the essentials to toggle switches.  3 different wire colors all trying to get matched up and some how none of those wire colors match the colors on my schematics.  So i said screw it, i'm making my own wiring.

It's on the studs and at full drop.  Had to squeeze it on.  But now I can see where I need to cut to get these puppies tuckin.

Snow came today.
Got a little too happy doing donuts with the bobcat to realize where my ditch was against the back of my parking lot.

Radar was trying to be a dalmatian.  Unfortunately for him, he's black.  It won't work.

Enjoyed breaking out the beard though.  Happy the snow is here... unhappy my vehicle is not operating yet.... ALMOST there.  (ish)

Somehow, I managed to powder coat and dip the wrong master cylinder.  Externally they are almost the same but interals are different and can't be swapped sooooo.... I have to put this ugly thing in for now.

Today was "get the wheels on there day".  So the cutting began.

And before I knew it... that landmark point of a build showed up when it's back on all fours and you kinda get excited inside cause you like what you've done.  All that hard work and effort just starts to peek around the corner at you and a slight "fizzing" sensation ensues....

Left the shop to go get the mail... head another noise.  Silly me didn't seem to notice the temporary shocks I put in there were VERY hacked together by whoever put them to together.  (probably cause I was in a rush to get this thing mobile.)  Stripped the treads right off the top.  Thought I snapped it at first.  Good thing I have many spares. Got her all fixed up quickly and I went and got the mail.  :)

I think tomorrows project is going to be making a tongue for it.  It just needs a tongue.  I usually cringe at those people that put a tongue in their bumpers but this thing just needs a tongue.  It's a happy dog that has just come up to you full of wet earthy type material wagging it's tail flinging mud everywhere shouting "HEY!  I'm a dog and I don't care that you're clean!"

Needed to do a little more cutting.  Here in Manitoba we have a law that anything that sticks out more then 2" past your fender needs to be covered.  So... this is my attempt at informing any curious authority figure that I fully intend to abide by the law but yet still need to get around.  Added my wheel spacers today.  I shall now gauge how long brand new wheel bearings last.  :)

Then I went out and got stuck in my back yard.  Turns out my light whips double at flash lights.  AWESOME!  Good thing I have lots of these in stock at the shop.  Might need to put some on all my other toys.

So yesterday I went to go pick up a MSM engine.  Guy told me where he lived which was about half an hour away from me.  Ok great.  Went to go get it last night, turns out it was more like an hour away from me by the time I got to his house.  He leads me out into a field and pulls a bucket off the engine. It's not a msm engine.  It's a 1.8 mazda engine of some sort.  Whatever it came out of, I wasn't interested in purchasing an engine that's been sitting in a field and not even what I wanted.  That was annoying.

However in other news...

The Snowdster likes to park on top of snow piles every chance it gets.

It was warm the other day too.  Turbo wanted to head into town with me.  However he was slightly confused as to where to sit as there's a roll bar in his usual location.  He didn't like this.  He wants to be up high and looking all magestic.

I always seem to have holes in the wrong places on the days when I'm welding or grinding.  I was dancing on my chair all weekend...

Needed some black doors for my decals that came in.  Forgot I needed the black ones for the white doors on this car and ended up putting the black ones on something else.  Next solution was to paint the doors black so I could use my white decals.  Today was a quick little "make it black" project.  No paint booth.  Just git er done.

I see what you did there.......
I'm all natural.  The integrity of my shaft is just fine.  Rigid enough to get the job done but yet just enough flex that it wont break from to much abuse.

The downside to the 1UZ is that it doesn't make a lot of power for its size, and there is not much aftermarket support, especially compared to an LS. On the other hand, the 250ish horsepower it does have is plenty to hustle a Miata along. The real challenge is going to be fitting the engine and dealing with the subframe and steering rack location. And the transmission. And driveshaft/differential.

Didn't make it very far into the snow.  I need more traction.  Like tracks.  Those would be great.  Maybe one day.

Ya and I wasn't watching what was going on when pulling it out of the bush with the tractor.  Too caught up in why it wasn't moving, finally got off the tractor and discovered my problem.  I have a wedge situation.

With that, we identify the weak spots.  Reinforce.  Find some more traction. And we'll be back at er if the snow sticks around.  Otherwise it's v8 time!

When I saw the ski setup I was going to ask how you planned on locking the front brakes or limiting rotation. Skis need to be able to pivot where they meet the 'leg'. Having the pivot at the hub, well, you see the issue now.

Looks kinda cool with no body panels.  But I want people to know it's a miata still so I'll put them back on.

Pops came to help out for the evening.  Every kid who watched home improvement I think likes the idea of working on a car with their dad.

Light whips are just as functional as they are cool.  I can see my groceries quite nicely.  It's actually pretty handy.

How does one document the coverage one is getting on instagram?

My car is on instagram...

Is that what you're looking for?

Just got pulled over again.  No ticket this time but he did call it into mpi.  I wonder if I provide documentation of all my work, will they let me keep my car on the road?  I'm going to guess that's a "NO" but I guess we'll see what those fellers decide.

He was a nice guy.  I had the roof off cause I was on my way to canadian tire to get some tables.  He invited me to come sit in his car where it was a bit warmer.  Told him about the project.  He was certainly interested but at the same time, had a job to do.  Cops are people too.  Treat them like one and they treat you like one.  :)

Got my tables and headed home.

Steinbach is still transitioning out of the small town phase so I just assume the police have some grace for those of us that grew up here and still think of it as small town.
However driving around a life size RC car is pretty much a magnet for questioning no matter where you go.

Well it's been a crazy summer.  Had some major life changes.  Doing lots of other stuff.  Trying to have a life again and not spend 20 hours a day building cool stuff.  It's not all that fun when you do that for 6 months in a row.    Here's what you haven't seen of the Eppic Offroadster from this summer if you're not following this thing on instagram or facebook.

Instagram: @Eppicindustries
Facebook: Eppic Industries
Youtube: Eppic Industries

Starting things off with my biggest event of the year.  We were the #1 thing to see at Steinbach's Summer In The City.  Here's a wee bit of what went down at that!

Hey hey, how abouts an updates eh?

Didn't end up putting my 1uz in the car.  That's going in a different project.  Rebuilt the 1.6L as it felt wrong to just throw away all that hard work I did making it look pretty.
Sure more power would be nice but, power costs money and we all like to put our money in different places.  One day this thing will get some more power.  Until then... here we go.

Bought myself some 14" tires of a rzr.  Traction is a win now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5J8oOyplMw

That burning oil issue however was no longer something I was willing to put up with.  The time came to pull that fancy painted engine out of there.

First things first is to check those bearings.

Disassembled on the bench
(https://i.imgur.com/YHKrplr.jpg)

A fair amount of build up eh?  That might be enough to increase compression.

The cost of burning equal amounts of fuel and oil are clearly visible.

Dinky tires and out he door she goes while I rebuild the engine.  Reminds me of a monster truck with regular truck tires on it.

Good thing I have a bunch of these engines laying around.  Pull the best crank out and polish that one up.

New pistons.  .030 over
(https://i.imgur.com/Owyi3up.jpg)

Serviced my lifters with the help of my redneck apprentice.

Valve retainers are a real patience testing practice.  Pesky buggers sure are annoying to get in place.

Slap that head back on there and lets get her back together.

No need for a transmission jack.  I stay fit for a reason. (I have 8 miata's.  I'm just helping reinforce the hair dresser stereotype with that shirt choice apparently. Don't judge me!)

Had to compare it to the Cummins sitting right beside it.  That engine is almost the size of the whole car.

And it's sittin pretty ready to go back in.

Celebration time now that it's in and runs!

Up next on the picture list is some anticipation for the future.  I sell lights.  An Eppic right needs to represent!

Whilst the Offroadster is getting it's new engine, I acquired another Miata to drive.
We call it the Minilift Miata.  It's turned into an experimental vehicle on different ways to lift a miata.  Like throwing front suspension in the rear.  Free 50% lift kit.

It had a diff with a better gear ratio for my big tires so that all got swapped along with the suspension setup I was running on it.  NB miata shocks and springs with NA top hats.  Also another variant of lifting a miata.  Gives about 1.5"-2" of lift.  More on that car later.

This car has come a long way.

Black friday came around and I bought myself a Paco kit to see how that compared to my home built lift.  There's is better built.  I just used scraps from around the shop.  Not high quality water jet cut pieces welded together.  So here we have a Paco 3" lift and NB suspension.

Random moment in the shop when I had to filter out all the BS around me...

Previous picture was placed for the intent of at least making you smirk if not giggle.  It's ok to laugh.  Just let it out.  You'll feel better.

Still have no idea what to do with these things.

Also Black Friday yielded an awesome dealio on Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's!  Probably Canada's 4x4 communities favorite tire.  A healthy upgrade for this beast.  235/75r15

With that stage of the build completed.  I finished off the year in Mexico on this thing!  SO MUCH AWESOMENESS!

Came home and got on the 3d printer to make some new air vents.  Turned out pretty neat actually.

Bumper ripped off on the way home from that day in the snow...  So I needed to make a new one.  The scrap bin was kind to me.

Some of my light pile is starting to get used.

Then it was time to get back to work!  Here in Canadia we are not allowed to have cool uncovered wheels.  First step is to WELD UP THEM UGLY HOLES FINALLY!

Then came another attempt to come up with a fender flare that looks half decent began.  No more awful tubes!

But gave that idea up as I didn't like it much more then the tubes.

Now... as per the build, go big or go home.  Lets sculpt some custom wide body madness onto this guy and make us an Eppic offroadster-prerunner!
Not knowing what I'm doing, with just an idea in my head of what could work, I set off to work.

Simply because I have to power to do so... Mr. Redneck apprentice in training dude guy buddy pal makes for some entertaining pictures.  His name is Denzel by the way.

I'm finally liking the trajectory these flares are headed.

From here things seemed to escalade... go big or go home right?  No wussy fenders here.  Lets go with a full wide body big wheeled bad assed pre-running trophy truck style Miata!  Because street cred is more valuable than all these new cryptocoin's.

The thing with experimenting is that you don't really know how things are going to go.  So it's been a slow process of trial and error.  After starting this endeavour, I've done a little research.  Apparently this is actually somewhat of a fairly common way to do this task.  For those that are wondering why I use expanding foam.  It's my base for shaping how I want my fenders to look.  Once I have them formed how I want, I fiberglass over the foam.  Sand it down.  Body filler on that.  Sand it down.  Then paint the car.

The typical trend this process is taking is add some foam.  slice most of it off.  Then add some more in other places.  And slice that off so you can add more foam in more places again.  All this is time consuming as you have to wait for foam to cure.  (24 hours)  So in the interest of efficiency, I started on some other projects on the car as well.

Like rock lights!

And in order to get my wheels sitting where I would like them, I needed to extend my control arms a tad. This also aids in the correction of my cv angle.

Also coming up with new and different ways of suspending the miata chassis.  Mr. Denzel did all the research required and fabbed up some long travel suspension from some ford shocks and honda springs.  DIY is the way of life around these parts!  That man deserves a medal!  I like having him around.

Starting to lay the drywall mud to fill in the holes.  Cheaper than actual body filler.  Strength doesn't matter at this stage.  This is just for shaping purposes.

And there we have it.  One smoothed out(ish) custom wide body off road miata.

Today we guide coat and find them low spots.

And then once you find those low spots you have to make both sides match.

But it's slowly coming together.  Hopefully just a couple more weeks to go.

I've had guys asking if I'm making replications of these flares.  If there was the interest I think I might.  Anyone have experience with producing fiberglass from a mould that would steer me away from that idea for any reason?

Sad little motor can't wait for all this dust to go away so it can be clean again...

Now all that hard work of shaping and making the form I want gets taken away to make room for the fiberglass and give it something to bite onto.

And then the glassing begins.

Fortunately the front fenders come off easily making the underside easy to do.  The rears... that's a different story.

This is coming along so well, its not exactly how I would have done it but I don't care, its your build not mine. Its cool and you're putting in crazy amounts of work and it shows, I cant wait to see how it looks in the end (we all know theres no "end" but you know what I mean).

Well... That was one heck of a long weekend.  55+ hours this weekend put on the build. Had a couple helpers to get some of the smaller tasks tidied up.

So here we go.

Since I sell all sorts of LED's I get the cream of the crop when it comes to my own vehicles.  These bad boys have barely hit the market in North America.  Hella dope imo.

Also brought in some of these to try.  Customizeable light bars.  Mount them in any configuration you like and as many as you want.

Came across this picture again.  I still like my subframe,  :)

Fiberglassing continued to completion this weekend.

And If you balance things just right you can get away with some tricks here or there.

After the glassing was done, it was time for the body filler.

Denzel here is my redneck apprentice.  He's fitting in quite well.

This popped up on miata club.  Guy is making t-shirts.  Love it!

I immidiately had to improvise my own manlyishnesskindasortawannabe blow dryer mod.

Denzel spent most of the weekend wiring lights.

Rock lights are 90% done.

Light bars are waiting for the roof rack to get finished. Had to test out some functions.  Here's your sneak peek.

Sand and add... sand some more and add some more.  I spent close to four hours on this front fender.  Sanding by hand.

This young man is learning to do body work.

Almost done sanding.  Not 100% there but we are close to the primer stage.

And after soooo many long hours working on the car, I had to call it a night.  I cleaned up and left her there until tomorrow.

I lived streamed most of the weekend on my Eppic Industries fb page.  Hit 66,000 hits today.  That was kinda neat.

So all this hard work has me totally exhausted and I'm starting to get sick because of it.  So I'm trying to slow down a bit.  However, this thing is due for a big off-road event next weekend so there's a bit of a push to get it painted.  I wont get everything done that I was hoping to get done by then.  But that's ok.  It's just a car.  It's already a super bad-ass machine like this.  :)
Here's yesterdays progress.

New custom LED switches came in.

Didn't get to priming yet.  Keep finding little things here and there that I may as well do now while i'm this far.  Like paint the hood.  Ya it's black but it's a different black.  Rattled canned by some previous owner once upon a time.

Give her a bit of a bath to see where I really am with the body work.

At least I got the inside of the front fenders coated.  Just rattle canned.  Don't care how that part looks.  It's getting a liner anyway.

Well there are a few issues.
Body filler absorbs water. So in different temperatures it will be prone to cracking as that water expands or contracts.
Another issue is that moisture will be trapped, and will rust away the car below the filler.

Well if that is a true fact I'd say it's a good thing there's only fiberglass under this. :)

I'm not sure on the rust part of things though. I'm always interested in learning though.  If there was moisture still there, wouldn't your primer and paint seal any potential mositure under the surface thus inhibiting oxygen to enter the equation which would be necessary for corrosion to occur?
Might be one of those on paper things vs reality things?

As a red seal automotive tech, I was trained the brake fluid is hygroscopic.  So in theory ya it soaks up moisture. But every lid on a brake master cylinder that I've seen is vented allowing theoretical moisture in.  Can't say I've ever had to fix anything brake related due to having too much moisture in the brake fluid.

Either way, this thing easily has had enough to time to dry out before it gets any sort of top coating. I could maybe agree with you if you're in a body shop setting where you're pumping out work as fast as you can and not giving that moisture time to evaporate fully. That could be a real world scenario where moisture might be an issue.

You don't want water or anything liquid on body filler. A mild degreaser before priming lightly spraying it and wiping it off as quickly as possible.

Body filler is very porous and soaks up moisture. It's the reason you have to use fiberglass first which won't absorb anything that might get through a weld or repair. It also doesn't evaporate fully, cool temps and humidity can also affect it.

You also want to top coat it sooner than later with an epoxy primer or sealer and top coat.

Alrighty alrighty.  This morning I woke up at 2am.  Stayed in bed till 4am trying to sleep but alas I gave up and headed to the shop to paint.  With my hot cup of coffee and a healthy ol lickin from Turbo, I was wide awake and ready to go.

With a shiny layer on there all my dents and non straight lines magnify nicely as to show me where to improve things for Prototype #2.  (Yes Yes I too can see that it's not perfect.  Ran out of time to get out the laser and check things.  This thing is going in the bush next weekend anyway.)

Interesting fiberglass work. I also cringed when you hosed down your filler: the other guys are right, that jeopardizes the whole thing for exactly the reasons they pointed out.

Since they seem pretty much done though, this would be an excellent time to use them as plugs for a master mould so you can replicate them. Aside from the advantage of being able to replace them if ever they get damaged, you also lose the mass amounts of foam, filler, drywall mud etc. Plus your rear overs would be removable, for when the metal underneath rusts.
