Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: 99blackSE on March 11, 2013, 08:09 PM
Well like on Heights I thought I would start a thread that would facilitate general conversation about the sport (or industry).  So to start off, if anyone from Heights remembers shocker45, Jordan, he's recently been confirmed to race in the AMA Super Sport series for 2013 under TPL Racing.  I thought that was pretty neat to see a local guy slot into a full season in AMA.  Maybe one day he'll be with McCormick in WSBK.

I love watching his race vids. He is quite good. And younger than I originally thought.

Wish I had time for more racing.

I think he's our age?  Maybe a year younger?  He's has some talent that's for sure.  All I remember is him and Bob at Burnout in '06 buying Myles, you, and myself shots and then seeing him at an FCOM meet back in '06.

I'll be looking into turning my pants and jacket into a two piece and have been recommended Guy Anthony in St. Boniface by some folks from the MRA board.  When I get that done I'll post up some pictures.

I want a new jacket this year. The current ones gonna be up for sale soon.

Switching to leather and I think I need a bigger size.

How much are you looking to spend?  I ask because there's been some really good full one piece suit sales on US sites lately for about 4-500.

I'd learn the limits of something not brand new first. But that's just me.

It's a first year model. I'd cringe at the prices of body panels...

It's taking forever to get my bike safetied, but I assume that's because they're busy with Sleds and Quads right now anyways.

Maybe I'll ride the KZ another year.

Haha dammit.  The GS was a great bike, for sure I'd like to get another one in the stable.

I hope to return in mid-April with the sumo.  It looks like the temperature may be above zero not this weekend but the one after.  If that's the case for sure heading out on the weekend.

do it!  probably get some comments about this, but I love fast bikes too... but in the end a really light bike is the most fun I've had... and perhaps James May said it best, its more fun to experience a vehicle at its limits, so with a smaller displacement bike you may see those limits more often.

Bonus is better gas mileage and cheaper insurance.  love my 500... although it really helps its in the 50-62 HP range.

if i wasn't certain that bike would kill me in the first 4.23 secs... I would love one.  and yeah $30k would buy me a lot of cafe racers and side cars.

Me "Hey, I'm here to pick up my Bike"
BikeShopOwner "Okay, I'll have the guys bring it around and load it into your trailer"
Me "... Yeah, I'm gonna ride it home"

*Prolonged Silence*

BSO" You're joking right?"
Me "Sadly no, I don't have any other way of getting it home"
BSO "You're gonna crash"
Me "Hopefully not"
BSO "No, I'm telling you. You. Are. Going. To. Crash"
Me "I could walk it home I guess"

BSO "I like that Bike, so I'm gonna load it into my truck and deliver it for free"

Me :D

I need a tamper proof bolt screw driver, if there is such a thing. My fireblade has tamper proof bolts and I want to take my front fairings off for cleaning and redecalling and paint but I can't manage to get these bolts off without a special tool. Know where to find one?

I got a set from Can Tire as well. Strange your fairing bolts are security ends...like security torx or ?  I know the ignition cylinders on all mine have security torx but I've never seen on fairings.

Found out that they are not security screws but rivets. I've tried everything to get them out but I think I'll have to drill out. But I am waiting to pull it all apart for now and get the decals redone another time.

Its Klegos CBR125R exhaust! It was a ridiculous deal, and I was ordering stuff from the same place anyway, so I convinced him . The welds on it are beautiful, and it appears to be quite decent quality.

Should be good for around a 10% increase in power, which is certainly something you can feel when you only make 10 :P. Sweet buy

Metal rivets?  That exhaust is pretty cool Dave heh.  A 125cc class at Gimli would be so much fun.

Post by: boostfreak on March 28, 2013, 10:49 PM
canadasmotorcycle.com, awesome deals, free shipping, and way cheaper than buying from the states once you factor in shipping/duty/gas/whatever.

I've bought from Revzilla.com too, they have great gear review videos on EVERYTHING.

In other news, had my first ride of the year today on something other than the dirtbike. Stoved the 250 back together and chooched it down my road and back. Was awesome.

Me and Klego put 15km on the GZ yesterday, lol riding it up and down a 1 mile stretch of road.

After adjusting the valves it literally had double the power. They were noisy as hell, and before it would have trouble getting past 60, now it sails past 80 easily. They still need some adjustment, but I'll do it again when I fix the head cover leak.

curious what everyone thinks, for the people just starting to get into motorcycles would the majority of you recommend spending a couple hundred on a bike you'd need to fix up or a couple thousand for something that will last you awhile?
Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: boostfreak on April 01, 2013, 10:45 PM
That depends on you. Are you willing to take on a project that demands some mechanical know how and a little financial commitment? Either one is going to cost roughly the same amount.

Too many variables to answer this accurately though. How far are you willing to go into building a project? What sort of motorcycle are you looking to purchase? Fixing a crashed R6 is much different than buying a finished cafe racer.
Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: Rallyman on April 01, 2013, 11:26 PM
^ this true. All depends what you want as a motorcycle. Unless you have or your friends have the ability and know how around a bike, it's not the easiest. Unless you have lots of time and are very patient go with a cheaper bike that doesn't need work as a first. I bought a cheap bike, something I knew would last me a few years till I wanted to upgrade and that's exactly what I did. Perfect decision for myself but might not be for you.

I think we've all been there dreaming of Ducatis on a Honda budget...

if you're mechanically inclined, keep in mind there's a solid minimum 5 months where the bike will be parked.  older bikes will need love, but are relatively cheap to fix if you look around.  my biggest piece of advice is buy a runner!  if it doesn't run you could spend more time trying to get it going and miss the whole season.

do you have your license already?  if not that makes it easier... I bought my bike for $650, wasn't pretty, but ran.  but i did dive in and replaced a bunch of parts, and will continue to do so... in the end I'll likely have $2k into it and be happy with a bike no one else will have.

the other route is to buy something newer, like the CBR250 or the CB500.  Honda makes some good beginner bikes, and of course insurance cost will always be a factor.  that's why I don't plan on going over 500cc anytime soon.

there is no cheap way to get into motorcycling, but a reliable machine is key to getting the most out of riding.

^good points. I think insurance here is a big reason why people leave the sport. The insurance on a brand new CBR500 is almost 500 dollars cheaper than my SV. Ugh

I wish I had a 25% or better discount. Or knew someone that could insure them for me lol

you and me both, now I wish I didn't speed as much when I had **** cars.. oh well.

I'd be much happier if MPI did away with the premiums having to be paid over 5 months, that is what is really killing ppl.   A $900 a year bike is really $2000... like for instance, in SK my bike will be $800; but that's for 12 MONTHS!!   so way cheaper, when you put it on lay up there, it's actually lay up not some "pro-rated bs"  I wish motorcyclists had a bigger voice in this province.  It's bad enough we have the highest base premiums in Canada (in AB or ON a sub 25yr old with a crap driving history would pay arm and leg for insurance)  but the whole Pro Rating over 5 months is a pile of BS, it's another money grab by MPI, not to mention that the claims pool is all motorcycles, meaning any accident, regardless of if it an at fault accident by a car are pulled from the pool of premiums paid by motorcyclists!!!!  no wonder the rates are sooooo high.

Ugh /rant  If I ever find a way to go after them, you'll surely hear me.

So instead of tracking down an OEM headlight for the DRZ to pass safety I've gone with this Polisport Halo...DOT stamped and much cheaper and lighter.  Price was practically the same as in the States from Main Motorsports, phoned yesterday and it should be in today for pickup. Probably will change out the bulb though to something a little brighter.

Rode for a few hours Wednesday and Thursday. Didn't see anyone else, got a few weird looks from cagers.

New bike needs tires, but I think I need to unload a bike or two first. XS400 is going up soon.

I'm out of action until the last week of April.  Guy Anthony is working his magic on my pants/jacket and due to some of his other projects mine will be pushed back a bit.  That's okay, I have a bunch of other work to do in the mean time on various things.

Can't wait for the streets to dry up and be cleaned. CBR will be getting some maintenance done in the next two weeks. Oil change, air filter, chain clean/adjust and general cleaning. Really happy with Deif's advice of starting out on a small displacement beik. Much easier to build confidence and experience on something I can feel in control of. Should be a fun and very fuel efficient summer!

I'm confident if you ride it enough your insurance will be paid for in gas savings within a few months, especially with urban riding.  My old GS500F never hit below 40 in the city IIRC.

We did the math. Riding a 125 for a few thousand kms a year instead of a typical car pays for its own insurance and then some.
Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: sabu243 on April 14, 2013, 12:38 PM
Did some quick maths:

Insurance:
125 from May 1st till Sept 30th - Insurance: $1,160
Neon - Insurance: $80/month x 5 months = $400

Fuel consumption: (City, where I do 95% of my driving, avg 1,000km/month for 5 months)
125 - 2.5L/100km on average (fuelly.com) - 5,000km on 125L of fuel @ $1.25/L = $156
Neon - 12L/100km on average (2.4 swap, turbo) - 5,000km on 600L of fuel @ $1.25/L = $750

Total cost:
125 - $1,316
Neon - $1,150

Then add in the lower maintenance costs of the 125 and I bet it's pretty close. 1,000km/month is a low estimate for me as I have been averaging around 500km/week going to school and crap. So it's not any great deal of savings but when you add in the fun factor of two wheels versus being in a cage, it's worth every penny. Besides, keeping miles off my neon makes me appreciate it that much more when I do drive it and keeps wear to a minimum. I'd rather fix a motorcycle any day of the week.

New helmet arrived today.  Went out for a ride and I would say the wind noise is better than in my icon alliance but not a whole lot.  Also picked up a icon stryker vest for under my jacket.  Does anybody know where i could go to try on boots? Im thinking either sidi vertigo or the alpinestar supertech but haven't had any luck finding a store that carry's either.  I stopped at headingly sport shop and called capitol but both places said they just dont sell enough to carry them.  Here are some pics of the new gear.

Shoei RF-1100?  I had the more basic Icon vest back in the day but I sold it and picked up a Forcefield Sub 4.

I ordered my Sidi STs from the States.

You can find mesh jackets for not a whole lot of coin, that plus the vest would probably be better than either a jacket or the vest by itself.

Good on ya, I hate preaching but just a vest I think you leave the rest of your upper body too exposed.  I've been up eyeing up a one piece since last year.  If things go okay this by the end of the year...http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=12993

My gear isn't back till next week sometime but that's okay, should give me enough time to get the DRZ up and running just in time for the "riding season" insurance months, looking forward to some serious savings on insurance...

one of very few.  I hear ya tho... I am looking for pants other then jeans, but not looking at full leathers.  I will likely look for the mesh jacket too later on.

Anyone have a textile pants?  read a few reviews of the mesh ones, but no mention of what they are like in +30 weather.

as for boots I have the alpinestars fastlane boots, and are very comfortable and light, highly recommend them... really good breathability too.

I don't wear full gear.  At all times I'm wearing a jacket, helmet, gloves and jeans.  I'm looking for a decent pair of riding jeans (the kevlar reinforced ones), to have a bit more protection, but not look silly while eating dinner or walking around the mall.  Can anyone suggest a pair that they've worn?

Also, I was looking at some riding shoes today at Winnipeg Sport and Leisure, and without going to a full on riding boot, I found that the only way that they differed from a pair of sturdy high top sneakers was that it had a tiny little piece of hard material over the ball of the ankle.  Can someone enlighten me as to how these are any better than a good pair of high cut sneakers?

**for reference, I was looking at the following shoes:

Meh, I'm not going to tell people what to do. Everyone makes their own choices. I've rocked my leathers in the Keg and a lot of other places, haha. I don't think it looks silly at all. Skin grafts that could have been prevented look silly.

I've never worn "riding shoes" so to speak, always full boots. I find boots more comfy (when wearing the pants) and have better ventilation. Those S/S ones look pretty awesome though. They are also reinforced in the toe, not only the ankle.

This. To each their own. But I like my skin where it is and how it looks (even being a ginger LOL) so I'll rock full gear whether a family dinner or hotdogs at Skinner's. If someone can't appreciate that at a steak dinner, they can fuk themselves.

Just did my first ever track day at 3 flags motorsports just outside of Regina. It was built for cart races so its a pretty small track. Ended up using one of the clubs rental bikes that was more suited to the track size. Crashed it twice and can honestly say I have never had more fun on a bike in my life. Hopefully many more track days to follow and no more crashes.

Sweet.  What was the post crash analysis?
Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: S1KRR on May 26, 2013, 11:45 AM
Learned a few things from my crashes, first i should get to know a bike better before trying to push its limits.  The bike i was riding had drum brakes whose stopping power felt like next to nothing especially compared to my s1000rr so on both crashes I came up to the corner fairly fast thinking i would brake hard to slow myself down before beginning my turn in, well i grabbed the front brakes and it felt like there was no brakes at all. This caused me to panic and from there I pretty much did everything wrong, I target fixated right where i didn't want to go which of course lead me right where i was looking, off the track and on my ass.  So in summary i learned to take things a bit slower and better learn how the machine I'm riding reacts to situations like hard braking, and that even when I'm uncomfortable I need to remember to look through the turn.  Thankfully the club whose bike I used was really understanding and just told me not worry about it and everyone crashes.

^ that actually might save a few lives.  I'm extremely guilty of not checking my ass when coming to a stop, which would have prepared me for what happened this morning.  I was in the right motorcycle lane of a lane on Salter stopped at a red light and this lady literally pulled up right beside me instead of staging behind me, basically making it look like I was lane splitting.  I looked back and gave her the "wtf ?!" hand motion and shook my head and proceeded to put as much distance away from her as I could.

My CBR was involved in a hit and run last week. MPI wrote it off. After 3 weeks of riding only. Was pretty pissed about it since the evidence I have is not enough to convict anyone of the crime, leaving me stuck paying my deductible. My next beik will likely be bigger than the 125 but not by much. Probably somewhere around the 250ish range. The shopping begins.

Bought a new beik today. Moved up to a 250. The slight increase in power is fun and it has a very sharp trans unlike my old CBR. Very happy with it. I'll post some pics soon once I get it cleaned. Being without a beik sucks.

I got mine done out in gruntal, brotherhood motorsports. Good guys considering I brought in a bike that's older than most of the guys in the shop! Just plan your fuel situation if you need premium.

Main said 3-4 days, capitol 2 weeks. Is that the typical length for a safety? I've never gotten a safety for a bike before so sorry for newb questions.

took mine to wildwood... but they pointed out that they would not be doing any work on the old bike (1980 Honda CX500) so if you are doing all the work yourself it's not a bad place to get it done.  Took one day's time last september.

Rear fender/mudguard
Forgot to clip in the front crossover brake hose
Forgot to put on the LEFT passenger foot peg, I put on the right side since it supports the oem muffler, but forgot the left, haha. Don't see how it matters since I don't even have a passenger seat.

Attempting to find a used mudguard, but if it comes to it I'll order new. I wouldn't mind having the stock part around anyway.

Ah yeah I got caught with that crossover line too on the SV1K.  That's weird they tagged you for passenger footpeg, I thought if you had no seat you didn't need pegs too.  I guess you need a splash guard to you don't end kicking out rocks at cagers?

But, the parts department at the Suzuki dealership in the Waverley automall is open Saturdays now iirc.

Wondering how all you bike guys wash your bike.

I'm sceptical with spraying down the whole bike to wash it, so I've just been using a wash sponge and some quick detailer to clean the bike.

Any products or procedures you would recommend would be great.

Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: boostfreak on June 18, 2013, 11:35 PM
^screw you. Keep it.

I spray down the whole bike. When I took the whole bike apart, I made sure everything is properly sealed and every wiring connector has the proper boots on them. I even spray under the windscreen, right onto the gauge cluster, etc. I use a soft "shower" setting, but everything gets nice and soaked. Then I mitt wash and dry. No problems.

Bike is having an odd issue, it doesn't want to start with the electric start, so I'll kickstart it just fine. Then I can turn it off and THEN I'll be able to start it with the electric start.

Is that normal behavior for a Carbed bike?
Title: Motorcycle Banter
Post by: boostfreak on June 25, 2013, 08:30 PM
Yes. Electric start on these old things is no good. The kick spins it over three times as fast.

After you got it running, you made it easier for the electric to start it

can vouch for canada's motorcycle...  as for fit, go 2 sizes bigger for most alpinestars jackets, ie.  if you wear a XL tshirt, get a XXL jacket, or go to a local store and try some one.

Gloves are tough too, just go read about them online, most ppl will tell you how the fitment works.

Post by: boostfreak on June 27, 2013, 12:44 AM
I measured myself and the alpinestars fitting was spot on. My Sidis are a touch big but not enough to cause any problem.

+1 for trying before buying

Bought some spools for one of my bikes but it looks like the previous owner had spools in there and laid the bike down. Now the hole where the spool threads in is broken for lack of a better word, does anybody know who could weld something on my swingarm so I can use a stand?  Also open to other suggestions, don't really want to buy a new swingarm just so I can use a stand. Here is a pic of the damage sorry coulda get a great pc with my iPhone. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/12/umuju3yj.jpg)

^ that sucks.  I can handle frame sliders but that is one thing that always worried me about spool sliders.  Unfortunately I can't really give any suggestions for a fix.

I threw an Acerbis LED Vision HP on the DRZ today, hoping to run a 55W Phillips Moto-Vision in it eventually. A little pricier than the old Polisport MMX but has a few more features.  Not sure how I'll wire up the LEDs down the road but I'll put them on a switch I guess instead of wiring them to the turn signals.

So I finally decided to get my Class 6 licence, went for the written and destroyed that mofo  :unamused:  perfect score, granted it was really common sense if you've been anywhere near a bike.

My cousin just gave me his extra helmet, it's a scorpion exo 700 :D super nice and fits snug.  Now I need to register for the MST course, thanks to recommendations from Dave I'm going to likely take the 21-hour course before fall hits but I still need a jacket, boots, and pants (I guess I could use jeans), I already have gloves.

I'm looking at a few bikes, hoping to spend between $1000-$2000 on a decent 250cc or 500cc sportbike to start with, should last me a few years at the least.

My questions:

Besides the obvious testing to see which bike feels the best to you, the rider.  Any other specific things to look for in a starter bike?

Maybe I'll get a chance to come out for a boot with you guys next spring/summer :)

Hey guys, not sure if you've heard, but we're doing a RIDE OF THE CENTURY (Winnipeg style). It'll be next Sunday (not long weekend Sunday).

Trying to get as MANY bikes as possible, doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's got two wheels! Meet at the RED RIVER EX parking lot for 7 PM, then we will cruise Portage, Route 90, Lag, Peguis, Main, then we're ending up at Earls Main is the current plan... We've got 60+ confirmed bikes so far, so if you know a rider, let them know!

I've mounted frame slider but never had to use them.  Never had swingarm or fork sliders though.

I'm leaning towards getting frame sliders just incase the only thing being I'm not a fan on how they look.

My bike and all my buddies had frame sliders, however they were installed before the bikes were purchased so no point in taking them off.

I'd rock one.  You'll catch flack from any other cruiser brand whore (read Harley, Victory, etc.) but being Japanese you'd figure it would have the reliability down pat.  Seems like a hell of a steal for an '09.  A similar model Victory (Vegas Jackpot) would go for 12-15k.

Not any worse than everyone jumping on the cafÚ racer bandwagon these days. The angst towards Harley reminds me of import fanboys thumbing their noses at domestics; times have changed.  The Revolution engine in the V-Rod was co-developed with Porsche (making more power and identical or better fuel economy than my SV1000S despite a larger displacement) and features such as ABS and Brembo brakes are standard kit which is just the same as Japanese machines these days.

Not saying you need to like euro or jap bikes instead. I also understand the significance of both the evo and revo engines and the co-development with buell and porsche on the latter, as I'm actually an avid fan of certain harleys. Doesn't change the fact that when you compare almost any harley that people buy (like an XL1200C for example) to a variety of other bikes in the same spectrum on the market you end up with something that's cheaper, has proven to be more reliable, and generally handles better. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy older harleys and have had an Aermacchi and nearly bought a knucklehead and an XR750. A lot of their current market offerings still prey off people who want to buy "murican bikes for murican life" and don't hold much substance otherwise.

I also definitely agree that the harley hate bandwagon is just as stupid as the sportbike love bandwagon, or the cafe bandwagon, or the chopper bandwagon, or the retroclassic bandwagon, etc.....

Slightly taller gearing and my DRZ would have been perfect for highway the way it was.

Harleys are good bikes, never lose value (well everything but the Sportster) but shake fairly violently, get used to tightening and checking bolts every ride (tho this should be done on any bike).  The bike you choose should be based on comfort, and what works for you.

agreed in most part.  I've ridden a vrod and can say that's one smooth bike with tons of power, if there was a harley for me to buy that's the one... but being in MB with our rapey MPI rates I'll stick to the "cafe" bandwagon, especially since I don't really do a lot of highway riding.  Sub $900 (no discount) is something I can handle on insurance, but some guys out there have a deeper passion and have the money to dish out for that, good for them.  I'm happy spending $1500 on a bike that is super reliable, starts every time and puts a smile on my face... which is the reason we all ride in the first place.

I do want a supermoto as well sometime, but side car first... no one is on that bandwagon except that guy on the Ural that drives 4 seasons in the city.  And can't be happy enough that the chopper phase has disappear almost.

Never had any issues myself.  I'll likely be going with a DL650 V-Strom next as it is fairly close on insurance and fuel but handles the highway and long trips a lot better.  Hard to give up the nimbleness of the DRZ but maybe another one will return as an urban fighter and as a "ride to the trail and then ride the trail itself" machine.

Know nothing about bikes, but went out for a drive last night and encountered a group of 7-8 guys weaving in and out of traffic, lane splitting, and generally riding like total douchebags on Main. Couple of the guys had mohawks attached to their helmets, and one had the gall to pull up next to me and accuse me of trying to brake check them when I was stopping at a red light (I did no such thing; last thing I want is my summer car getting damaged...). Proceeded to flip me off and they all took off like bats out of hell when the light turned green.

Please tell me these antics aren't widely accepted in the bike community...

They're widely accepted by a small (but becoming awfully large) subset of the bike community who are obsessed with riding bikes aggressively on streets, popping wheelies, doing burnouts, and generally acting like morons. It's commonly younger bikers who are on sport bikes who pay a lot in insurance and feel it's their right to drive like morons because they pay so much for their bikes and they're "so powerful". Most of these sorts of people don't wear real gear (chest protector and a dirtbike helmet usually or a get-up like what's shown above), and are generally the people you hear of getting in serious accidents and dumping their bikes.

The rest of the bike community thinks these guys are idiots and should not even be allowed to ride a bicycle. They give motorcyclists a very bad name, jack up the insurance costs, and make it tough to ride anywhere without getting extra police attention. They also make most people unfairly judge anyone on a sport bike, when there are also many responsible owners who don't do dumb stuff on their bikes.

So this past April, I acquired this:

It's a 1978-1981 Yamaha DT175. It came with some extras such as new tires, new chain, etc. It was someone else's project that they started working on but needed to get rid of it at the time. The bike also hasn't ran in like 20 years AFAIK. Oh it also came with another frame as the frame it was on is not title-able. The "new" frame was imported from the states.

I got the bike in Rubbermaid containers pretty much. Everything was disassembled. I started by ordering all the misc. maintenance items such as cables, bearings, etc. Initially, I wasn't looking to doing to it more than that but somehow it snowballed. Engine was completely disassembled and everything inspected. Transmission looked fine. Cylinder wall looked okay but thought since it's opened up and everything, might as well, get a fresh new piston and bore. The frame and misc. bits then went in for powdercoating. The fuel tank and fenders were then painted yellow with black decals (going for a Yamaha theme). The rims were re-laced and true'd with new spokes. Reassembled it with new hardware mostly everywhere. The autolube system was deleted. Currently running pre-mix.

I finished it a week ago. Safetied it and been riding it for the past week. It's really fun to rip around in.

I recently purchased a 250 Ninja as I wasn't sure if the DT will be done in time to do any riding this season. It's also nice to have a bike like that compared to the DT as there's quite a bit of contrast between how they ride.

Edit: special shout out to Nish, I wouldn't have been able to do this project without his help

Super random question, but if I theoretically put all the required DOT items (lights, mirrors, horn, tires, reflectors, plate, etc ) on a race style ATV would I be able to register it as a custom bike?

I dont see why not, those 3 wheeler things from BRP are almost the same idea ?

I think the vin is dedicated off road. I'm sure you'd see a lot of them if they were legal.

Going to buy a new bike this spring - torn between an FZ07 or a DRZ400sm. The FZ is a bit cheaper to buy, but twice as much to insure.

What do you guys think!?

Do you want the versatility of a supermoto where you don't have to worry about if you can go a little off road or do you want a wicked street bike with quite a lot of torque and will have no problem lifting the front tire when you give it some.

I want both haha!

I went on my lunch to sit on the 07, it is a bit small/soft for my 6'3, 250lbs body. I don't think I want to upgrade to the  FZ09 just yet. Probably going to stick to the DRZ, there are a couple of decent used ones floating around.

Ugh, I wanted an FZ07 last year. Checked one out, love the styling. It was priced really well and sold before I could get rid of my bike and get that one.

If you're learning still, not doing too much highway, and don't need much cargo capacity I'd take the DRZ. They still have their own issues and you're basically buying a 2005 whether it is a 2005 or a 2016. As far as I know all they did was change color schemes. Better on fuel and much cheaper to insure as well.

The FZ you're now in naked sport classification and are paying the same as any 1000cc machine because it is over 500cc. In that case if you don't mind the heft and power I'd go with a FZ09, Street Triple, GSX-S 750, or something a little bigger.

A little extra power never hurts for highway passing. The 1ks almost too much as you now realize you only need 4 seconds or less to merge from a dead stop...on the highway yet.

I did mine in AB, so I can't speak directly to what it will be like here though I assume it will cover the same things.

My advice is to pay attention and really practice the slow speed drills. They seem lame/boring at first, but you will build crucial skills as a rider. Also, make sure you get to practice emergency braking/turning.

And don't be afraid to practice both of these on your own when you get your bike. I think the biggest issue with Motorsports is ego. Don't expect to be the best or worst one there, just focus on learning and getting better.

Good advice ^

No surprises, very straight forward and very patient instructors, are you taking the 8 or 20hour course?
Title: Motorcycle Banter

The 20hr course, I've never rode a bike in my life so it's better I take the longer course. I don't even think i'll get a bike this year, but I will take the course and determine if it's a hobby I want to go forward with

Knowing that,  I'd suggest spending some time on a pedal bike prior to the course. It sounds funny but I've heard it is very helpful in preparation for the course.  Do you know what bikes will be available to the course?

I think you are making the right call on taking the longer course and using it to determine your long term interest in the sport/hobby.

Buddy got a 1983 Honda Magna 1100 for free from his old man this weekend.  Bike has sat for the last 10 years or more.  We dragged it into my garage, drained all the fluids, flushed them out, cleaned the inside of the tank, new plugs, fluids, and battery and it fired up without skipping a beat.
Clutch was non existant on it, so that too got a full dissassemble and cleaning.  After a good 30min of bleeding the thing it finally came back to life.

The bike drove like brand new!  Time for it to get a little chopped up. Makes me want to pick up a cheap bike project now too.

Looking to grab a new helmet this season, something light and something quiet... Read plenty of reviews on shoei & arai helmets but they all seem to go back and fourth

Any recommendations?
And where to grab one locally? If the price is reasonable?

Many places carry Shoei, Arai I haven't found anyone locally (always ordered out of the US).  Unfortunately they aren't cheap either.

What are you using for a lid right now? The one I'm using is pretty heavy and wind noise is very loud and annoying

90% chance I'm picking up a bike tomorrow. Pretty excited.
Will be a project and hopefully ready to ride next riding season.
I Guess I should get my class 6.

From what I hear both of those lids are very nice, but with quality comes a much higher price tag. I don't know where locally you can get them, otherwise check out canadasmotorcycle (FREE SHIPPING ). I ordered half my gear from there.

Yeah if I'm going to pay that much I would prefer it fit perfectly

Yea, I totally agree. I went to Capitol to check out the fitting for my lid but mine is just an Icon Alliance.

That is exactly what I did, but i didn't tell the stores that is what I'm doing. But just got myself sized for the lids I liked then just ordered them, they arrived in like 5 days too.

"Oh hey, don't mind me I'm just trying these on for size"

I've never been to capital to be honest maybe I'll stop by and see what they've got in stock

HAHA you need to be a little more convincing then that. I went to Wildwood, Headingley, and Capitol. It's not a big shop like the others, but I find they do have some pretty decent gear and comparable at times to Canada's Motorcycle, If you don't have the patience for those shipping times.

I wear a shoei rf1200 and it fits me very well. Wind noise will be almost identical across all kinds of helmets. The only way it'll be louder is if the front shield isn't sealed properly but any helmet over 200 will likely make no noticeable difference. Should be wearing earplugs on the highway anyways.

I went to capitol to try on different helmets and they ended up having the one I wanted but not the size. The price they had was just as good as Canada's motorcycle.

My friends went to Headingley sport shop and tried on helmets and ordered from Canada's motorcycle.

Two Arai RX-Qs with their SAI blue mirror shield. Might try something different next time, Shark maybe, just to switch it up.  The shield change system is a little behind the times and is a little frustrating. They do offer pretty good customizing with the liner system though.  I am ordering a new set of pads and liner for mine as it has gotten a little loose over the last year or so and I prefer a snug fit.  For sizing I went off their sizing/head shape chart and the RX-Q seemed to work pretty good.

Riding fast is easy since you have more balance. Slow speed riding is a good thing to learn since that's where you do your stop and go traffic, turns, etc. There is a heavy focus on slow speed riding, but less focus other things like lane choices in different scenarios which is unfortunate. You'll have to do your own learning for that (videos/articles/etc.).

The short basic course is designed for people with some prior experience. The longer one goes into some more emergency type situations. You can only cover so much over a few hours each day. Beyond SSM best to read up lots, ride as much as you can, and look outside of the province for advanced schools besides the MRA track day school which just ended.

I'm looking into organizing some other opportunities from some programs out of the US for up here...

Booked my road test for the 19th of May, anything I should look out for or know about?

I think it's hilarious that if I fail my road test I literally have to ride away on my bike anyways

Shoulder check like a mofo, read the book, know your lanes/tracks

Failed my first one because I kept turning too sharp

Do I have to signal around parked cars?

Yes, treat parked cars the same way as you would in a car. Also, shoulder check every time you change tire tracks in your lane. Turn from the inside most tire track to whichever way you are turning and turn into the closest tire track.

Get a 300, a grom would be a lot of fun as a 2nd bike but it really doesn't have enough power to be your primary bike. I just sold my cbr300r and it was a great great bike, can't recommend it enough
