Common questions:

What is Autocross?

How do I Register for events?
For 2017 we will be using MotorsportReg: https://www.motorsportreg.com/calendar/?country=CA&q=wscc&radius=300&lat=49.84&lng=-97.11&loc=Winnipeg%2C+MB
This site is used by 700 motorsports clubs including all national SCCA events
For additional WSCC event registration details please follow this link: http://forums.wscc.mb.ca/index.php?/topic/10434-autoslalom-registration-guide/
Benefits of pre-registration:
-Save $10 per event ($5 for registering with MSR and $5 for all prepayments)
-Save time (streamlined event check-in process for all pre-registered competitors)

Where are events held?
Events are usually held at St. Andrews Airport unless otherwise noted on the schedule
If you are coming from Winnipeg it's Highway 8 northbound (aka McPhillips St).
Turn right on McPhilips Rd
25 later right on Aviation Blvd.
5 Feet later turn left on George Porayko Way (gravel access road)
Drive past the control tower on the gravel road to access the site. (DO NOT DRIVE ON THE ACTIVE RUNWAY)

"George Porayko Way" on Google maps.

Note: no one is allowed on site outside the event hours, the site is monitored by Nav Canada and any unauthorized trespassers with not be tolerated under any circumstances.

What time should I arrive on site?
**NEW FOR 2017, events will begin 1 hour earlier that last year, if you have not pre-registered online you MUST arrive on site prior to 9:30 am.

12:00 am – Online pre-registration closed
9:00 am – Gates open
9:30 am – Driver check-in & late registration. Course open for course-walks.
10:00 am – Check-in and registration closed. No competitors will be accepted after 10:00 am!
10:15 am – Novice course walk (Mandatory for first time participants)
10:45 am – Drivers meeting
11:00 am – Competition begins
Lunch after 1st heat (approx 12:45 pm – 1:15 pm)

For all competitors it is recommended that you pre-registier online. This saves you money and simplifies the registration process for everyone.
Recommended new participant arrive between 9 and 9:30 am, you will need time to for course walks and getting you car prepared. If it's your first time come at 9 am since you will need to take the novice course walk (MANDATORY FOR ALL FIRST TIMERS)

I don't have a race car or anything modified can I race my stock car?
Yes! Just about every car is welcome from a stock Corolla to a Corvette to a RHD R33 GTR provided it meets the requirements of the tech inspection. Self tech inspection sheets found here: PENDING LINK
Make sure you check each item on the Tech Inspection carefully BEFORE each event. please print and check everything before the event, then hand it in at the registration trailer when you arrive.
First timer tip, inflate your tires to the maximum recommended pressure ( it will be printed on your tire sidewalls). This will ensure you do not roll over the tires and prevents premature wear.

What car class am I in?

If you are new of unsure of your car class please class yourself as "A-Mod-Street" A-Modified on Street tires. If you have any questions or need assistance please ask in this thread: http://toptierimports.com/index.php?topic=2803.0 or http://forums.wscc.mb.ca/index.php?/topic/9304-2014-car-classing-guide-help-thread/

I'm not competing, but is it free to come watch?
It's free to spectate! But you must come to the registration trailer and sign the waiver. THE WAIVER MUST BE SIGNED BY EVERYONE ON SITE.

What should I do for lunch?
We usually have a hot dog vendor or food truck on site, please support them as they support us! Lunch is usually a 30min break that start between 1:30 and 2. (Due to the remote location you don't have enough time to drive to Lockport or Winnipeg to get lunch and come back on the lunch break).

What should I bring?
-Lots of water! No water is available on site. A cooler is very handy on hot days!
-Lunch/lunch money and snacks or a lunch
-Sunscreen, even on cloudy days!
-Good comfortable running/walking shoes (no sandals allowed while driving or working course)
-Dress according to the weather, yes we race in the rain but make sure you are prepared if it rains, coat, pants, hats, boots etc...
-Hand sanitizer or something to clean your hands is a great idea.
-Umbrella for rain or shade on hot days
-Bag or a bin to keep all of your stuff organized.
-Make sure you car is clear of any loose items such as loose change, garbage, clothing etc. (any floor mats not mechanically fastened to the car must also be removed)  No competitors will be allowed to leave the start line if loose items are left in the car.

Can I bring my helmet?
Yes, however only "Snell" rated helmets are allowed. If you are unsure check the outside base of the helmet were it meets your neck/spinr, it will have a Snell sticker on it. If it doesn't say Snell on it, don't bring it. We have Snell approved loaner helmets in all sizes for you to borrow. Only having the "DOT" safety rating is NOT enough, it MUST be Snell rated

Do I need to "work"?
If you are racing you must also complete a work assignment. Participants are split into and "A" and "B" groups. "A" works when "B" races and vise versa. Work consists of picking up knocked over cones and placing them back in their painted boxes, it's also great fun to watch the cars from the worker marshal stations. (no spectators are allowed in the work station areas during the event) Sign up for your work detail when you arrive at the registration station. Autocross supplies its own workers, this is how we keep racing cheap!

Can I bring my young kids? (under 14 years old)
No, it's highly recommend against bringing children to events. Children under 14 are not permitted on any timed runs. Any person under the age of 18 must have a minor consent form filled out at the timing trailer. If you plan to race do not bring your children, you will be unable to take them as you race or bring them to your work station. (children are allowed at any of the worker marshal stations)

I'm under 18, can I race?
Yes but only if you have the following:
-A valid class 5 license (no learners)
-A parent or legal guarding present with you
-A signed minor consent form from a parent or legal guardian

I'm under 18, can I spectate?
Yes but you must have a minor consent form filled out by a parent or legal guardian

I'm under 18, can I be a passenger in someones car?
Yes but only if you have met the following:
-A signed minor consent form from a parent or legal guardian
-14 years of age or older
-Only in a vehicle being driven by a parent or guardian

Why do keep seeing so many different names for this sport?
Autocross is the general term used to call the sport.
It can be abbreviated to "auto-x" (PS. please don't call it Auto "EX"  ;))
Legally in Canada the sport is called "Autoslalom" by ASN Canada (our racing governing body).
In the United States the largest governing body (SCCA- Sports Car Club of America) calls it "Solo". Up until a few years ago the SCCA called it "Solo II".

Why should I autocross?
-The people! Friendly,  like-minded individuals that love cars and racing
-Push you and your car in a safe and legal environment!
-The BEST way to improve as a driver. Almost everyone can "drive" but now many actually take the time to learn to master car control?
-Cheapest form of motor-racing! Cheap entry fees and cheap on consumable items such as brakes and tires when compared to other motorsports.
-The challenge of trying to get that perfect run!

For Sale:

Motegi Traklite Wheels
Size: 17x7"
Bolt Pattern: 5x100
offset: +42mm
Weight: 14.5lbs
Construction: Forged
Colour: Black
Centre Caps included for each wheel.

Tires: Yokohama Parada Spec 2
Size: 215/40/17
Treadwear rating: 300 (Ultra High Performance Summer tire)
Tread depth: 9/32
Build date: 2011

These wheels are in as new condition, 9/10 condition wise with only a few minor scratches on the wheel face, no curb rash or dents. Could be used as show car wheels if needed. highly sought after wheels for SCCA  FRS, BRZ owners as they are legal for C-Street and much lighter than stock. Wheels will fit FRS/BRZ, Subarus, most 5x100 VW, Neons and Cavaliers etc.

Tires have under 2500km on them and are in as new condition. Sat in a temperature controlled environment (always +10c) away from direct sunlight for the last several years. No cracking or damage of any kind. These tires are aggressive summer only performance tires with exceptional wet grip, (due to 10/32 depth and large void area these tires would handle better in heavy puddles/wet conditions than the most new extreme performance tires). I was going to use them as a dedicated race wet tire but am going in a different direction.

Sold.

Where are events held?
Events are held at St. Andrews Airport unless otherwise noted on the schedule

Turn right on McPhilips Rd
25 later right on Aviation Blvd.
5 Feet later turn left on George Porayko Way (gravel access road)
Drive past the control tower to the runway.

"George Porayko Way" on Google maps.

Note: no one is allowed on site after hours of operation, the site is monitored and any unauthorized trespassers with not be tolerated.

What time should I arrive on site?
For competitors it is recommended arrive between 10 and 10:45 am, you will need time to for course walks and getting you car prepared. If it's your first time come around 10am since you will need to take the novice course walk (MANDATORY FOR ALL FIRST TIMERS). New for 2014 entry cap at 65 driver per event, first come first serve. IF YOU SHOW UP AT OR AFTER 11AM YOU ARE TOO LATE TO RACE

I don't have a race car or anything modified can I race my stock car?
Yes! Just about every car is welcome from a Corolla to a Corvette to a RHD R33 GTR provided it meets the requirements of the tech inspection. Self tech inspection sheets found here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8B9UShCfDHAdkdlaEgwUUJENDg/edit
This is a self tech inspection, make sure you check each item on the car carefully BEFORE THE EVENT. please print and check everything before the event, then hand it in at the registration trailer when you arrive.
First timers, inflate your tires to the maximum recommended pressure (printed on all sidewalls). This will ensure you do not roll over the tires.

What car class am I in?

If you are new of unsure of your car class please class yourself as NYC (Not Yet Classed). If you have any questions or need assistance please ask in this thread: to be determined...

I'm not competing, but is it free to come watch?
It's free to spectate! But you must come to the registration trailer and sign the waiver. THE WAIVER MUST BE SIGNED BY EVERYONE ON SITE.

What should I do for lunch?
We have a hot dog cart on site, or pack a lunch. You don't have enough time to drive to Lockport or Winnipeg to get lunch and come back in time.

What should I bring?
-Water! No water is available on site. A cooler with cold water is very handy on hot days!
-Lunch/lunch money and snacks
-Sunscreen
-Good comfortable running/walking shoes
-Dress according to the weather, yes we race in the rain but make sure you are prepared if it rains, coat, pants, hats etc...
-Hand sanitizer or something to clean your hands is a great idea.
-Umbrella for shade might also be a good idea.
-Bag or a bin to keep all of stuff together

Can I bring my helmet?
Only bring a helmet if it is "Snell" rated. If you are unsure check the outside base of the helmet were it meets your neck, it will have a sticker on it. If it doesn't say Snell on it, don't bring it. We have Snell approved loaner helmets in all sizes for you. Only having the "DOT" safety rating is NOT enough, it MUST be Snell rated

Do I need to "work"?
If you are racing you must also complete a work assignment. Participants are split into and "A" and "B" groups. "A" works when "B" races and vise versa. Work consists of picking up knocked over cones on 1 of the 5 work stations, it's also great fun to watch the cars from these vantage points. Sign up for your work detail when you arrive at the trailer. Autocross supplies its own workers, this is how we keep racing cheap!

Can I bring my young kids? (under 14 years old)
No, it's highly recommend against bringing children to events. There is no running water or full bathrooms on site nor is there any safe areas to leave them. If you plan to race do not bring your children. You will need to find someone to watch them since you must complete your work assignment way from them (no children allowed at marshall stations. Children under 14 are not permitted to ride along with parents. Any person under the age of 18 must have a minor consent form filled out at the timing trailer.

I'm under 18, can I race?
Yes but only if you have the following:
A valid class 5 license (no learners)
A parent or legal guarding present with you
A signed minor consent form from a parent or legal guardian

I'm under 18, can I spectate?
Yes but you must have a minor consent form filled out by a parent or legal guardian

I'm under 18, can I be a passenger in someones car?
Yes but only if you have met the following:
-A signed minor consent form from a parent or legal guardian
-14 years of age or older
- Be in a vehicle being driven by their parent or guardian

Why do keep seeing so many different names for this sport?
Autocross is the general term used to call the sport.
For lazy people who don't want to spell out autocross you can abbreviate it to "auto-x" (PS. please don't call it Auto "EX"  ;))
Legally in Canada the sport is called "Autoslalom" by ASN Canada (our racing governing body).
In the United States the largest governing body (SCCA) calls it "Solo". Up until a few years ago the SCCA called it "Solo II".

Why should I come autocross?
-The people! Friendly,  like-minded individuals that love cars and pushing them to the limit!
-Push your car in a safe and legal environment!
-Cheapest form of motor-racing!
-The challenge of trying to get that perfect run.

No.9 should be much higher on the list and no.3 should include any fart can style muffler regardless of what skunk2 or J's Racing brand it is. It's ear splitting obnoxious and usually isn't very appealing either.

Motorsports / 2013 WSCC AutoSlalom Car Class Info/Questions Thread
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:33 PM »
Alright I've been seeing a lot of questions regarding car classes in the "Autocross thread". I've made this thread in the hope of getting more information available regarding car classes for the the 2013 WSCC (Winnipeg Sports Car Club) autocross season and hopefully convincing more TTI folks to join in.

Please note the 2013 SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) car class rule book is not yet available and some changes will be made over the 2012 rules. Also the WSCC supplementary car classification may or may not change from 2012. I'll do my best to update as more info is available.

*If you have never autocrossed before or only plan to attend a few events no need to worry about car classes all that much. Focus on learning how to drive and just have fun. :)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WSCC Info: How Car Classes are Divided into Groups

The WSCC uses SCCA car classes and divides them into 4 groups to better suit local needs.

1. SCCA Competition

Very simple here, if you look at the SCCA car classification under the rule book and follow it word for word you will end up in this class. Here's few easy questions to ask yourself to see if you fall into this class.

Do I have racing tires/or tires with a treadware under 140? If yes, you are in SCCA Competition.
Does my car follow the Street Touring (ST) rules from the SCCA rule book? If yes, you are in SCCA Competition.

2. Stock Street Tire
We have a separate group for Stock class because under the SCCA rules DOT racing tires are allowed. Keep in mind these race tires are anything with a tread rating under 140 but must have DOT stamp on the tire. The most competitive tire is arguably the Hoosier A6, however they cost x2 as street tires and last about 1/2 as long. Because of the costs involved our local Stock class excludes racing tires with a tread-ware under 140 to attract competitors and keeps costs low. Stock cars with racing tires can still compete, however they would compete under the SCCA Competition Group.

3. Prepared/Modified Street Tires
To compete in this group you must have a car that falls under Street prepared (SP), Street Modified (SM) Prepared (P) or Modified (M) rules but your tires must be street tires with a tread rating of 140 or more. Like Stock, this caters to the competitors with modified cars using street tires. Cars using race tires are allow cars to compete in SP, SM, P or M, however the correct placement for those cars is under the SCCA Competition group.

4. NYC (Not Yet Classed)
Not really a car class mostly a run what you brung group.  Anyone without a yearly membership or that doesn't know or care about car classes is in this group. No points are accumulated and no PAX factors are considered.

To clarify, if you are not an annual member of the WSCC you can only participate in the NYC group. You need a WSCC membership to enroll in a car class.

Yes! Just about every car is welcome from a Corolla to a Corvette to a RHD R33 GTR provided it meets the requirements for the tech inspection. Self tech inspection sheets found here:http://forums.wscc.mb.ca/showthread.php?t=19279
This is a self tech inspection, make sure you check each item on the car carefully. please print and check everything before the event, then hand it in at the registration trailer when you arrive. Sheets are also available at the trailer.

What car class am I in?
If you don't have an WSCC annual membership you will be automatically placed in the RAW class. If you are a member check out the SCCA 2012 solo rules for car classes: http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/2012_Solo_Rules_May.pdf

Why should I get an annual WSCC membership?
-Savings when attending more than 5 WSCC events
-Qualify for specific car classes with PAX factors (adjusted times based on cars)
-Accumulate points for the season
-Subscription to the Aficionado and all things WSCC

What should I do for lunch?
We have a hot dog cart on site, please support them as they supports us. Or pack a lunch. You don't have enough time to drive to Lockport or Winnipeg to get lunch and come back in time.

What should I bring?
-Water! No water is available on site.
-Lunch/lunch money or snacks
-Sunscreen
-Good comfortable running/walking shoes
-Dress according to the weather, yes we race in the rain but make sure you are prepared if it rains, coat, pants hats etc...

Do I need to "work"?
If you are racing you must also work. Participants are split into and "A" and "B" groups. "A" works when "B" races and vise versa. Sign for your work detail when you arrive at the trailer. This is how we keep  racing cheap!

Why should I come autocross?
-The people! Friendly,  like-minded individuals that love cars and going fast!
-Push your car in a safe and legal environment!
-Cheapest form of motor-racing!
