I could not find a thread discussing the law here. Obviously there are lots of people here mounting the Plate in different ways to avoid the bumper drilling and poor look of standards mounting.

I have personally done a temporary mount but I am thinking of trimming the bottom of the plate so it fits right (see picture). Do you think the police would care?

From the Drivers act:

Registration and number plate requirements

34          A person may not drive a motor vehicle or tow a trailer on a highway, and the person who owns a motor vehicle or trailer may not permit another person to drive or tow it on a highway,

(a) unless

(i) a registration card for the vehicle has been issued under this Act and is valid,

(ii) the vehicle displays, in accordance with the regulations, the quantity and type of number plates that the regulations prescribe for use on a vehicle of its registration class, and

(iii) the number plates display the vehicle's registration card number and, in accordance with the regulations, stickers showing the vehicle's registration class and that the registration is valid; or

(b) unless a valid registration permit issued under this Act for the vehicle is displayed on or carried in it in accordance with the regulations, or a valid permit under section 87 of The Highway Traffic Act is displayed on or carried in it in accordance with that Act.

You're not allowed to modify the plate. Don't have the specific code but it's not allowed.

I used to have a modified license plate (for about 4 years), and a cop buddy of mine said it was illegal to do, but that most cops really don't care, especially if you are driving safely anyways.

Pull on your big boy pants, lose the front plate and pay The Man when asked to do so.

I can't imagine why they would care - but it is comments like this that help.

Having no plate draws attention to me, and I have a heavy foot so no help needed. I believe a trim off the bottom would not,l draw additional attention, and it wouldn't be obvious that I cut it anyway.

It looks like you might have a tow hook on the front of your car? If so, you can get a license plate mount to screw in the tow hook and then no cutting required.

unfortunately for our cars this method doesn't work the greatest, as the location would have the plate blocking the front parking sensor.

@FastCrabbie unfortunately without drilling into the front bumper our choices are very limited. You could use something like a hide-a-plate (http://www.hidetheplates.com/). I didn't want to go through the trouble of ordering and installing it so I ended up just drilling my front bumper, unfortunately.

I have ordered a basic adjustable bracket. I will zip tie it to the lower grill and hope that works.
