A couple weeks ago, Dave sent me a link to a 1976 Yamaha XS500. It was cheap, broken, ugly, and heavy. Perfect. Dave, Keegan and myself picked up the bike today, but it wasn't an easy task. As previously mentioned, it's heavy, and both wheels don't move. Took 4 of us to load it into the truck, and 3 of us and a tractor to unload it. We used a dirtbike to tow it to where it will spend the next couple months feeling neglected.

And now pictures!

Missing right signal on the front

Seat's a little dickered

Another missing right signal

We messed around with it a bit today, the bike had been sitting for a few years so of course it wouldn't start. We checked the electrical system, and that was also all kinds of dickered.

Keegan and his friend trying to help out

First things to do:
Fuse box (ordered)
Battery
Get the wheels moving
Get it running

After that:
New seat
New signals

Eventually my plan is to take it all apart and cafe the hell out of it.

And some inspiration:

This is all kinds of sick. Can't wait to see what happens with this thing. I badly wanted it for myself, but decided it would be great for Shaunaynay here to start out with.

The '76 XS500 is *the* bike to start a cafe project on. There are tons of seats and other badass cafe parts available for it. She only has 7500 miles on her, so I don't expect any major issues. It sure was a dirty chooch to get off the truck and in the garage, but we got er did. The ol' Kawasaki played a lead role.

Yeah I think the calipers are frigged. They don't slide and it looks like someone beat the bag off the rear one with an ol' Selkirk beatin' antler. Rebuild kits are cheap so this should be an easy fix for the most part.

Cool! I've had my eye on an XS 400 on kijiji that probably needs some work. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

                              XS400 you say...

Toyed with O'Connors ride a little today. Managed to get the front brake caliper off, front wheel moves much more freely now. Both calipers will need a rebuild, but the kits are cheap and it's not difficult to do. No pics of that.

Took the fuel tank off to have a look at the ignition coil and the condition of the wiring harness underneath it. It all looks good, just very dusty. Brought the tank inside to defrost the cap lock and have a look at the rust situation inside.

                              Original Yamaha keys:

All in all, this has to be the best oldie tank I've come across, maybe ever. Yeah the paint is shot, but there are no dents, no exterior rust, the cap works, the petcocks work, and its not very rusty inside at all. I've dealt with much, much worse. Some vinegar will clear up the little surface spots inside, some powdercoating, new decaling, and a new seal will make it look and perform like new.

I've never had an issue with not sealing a tank, but only if the thing gets used regularly. If it sat a lot then I would seal it. Even then, if you keep the habit of having the tank full it shouldn't rust. I'm sure this one will get lots of use!

More parts on order today. I love how accessible cheap NOS Yamaha parts are. For fun I pulled a plug today and tried for spark, of course there was none. Pulled the points cover, wasn't a pretty sight.

Gasket failed and a bit of moisture got in. Points are nicely corroded and probably out of adjustment. Should be running soon though.

Very cool project. I'd love to do something like this myself. I'll see if I can find the time and money for it this summer.

this is all sorts of awesome.  cafe FTW.  bike was best purchase last year by far.

mike's XS has tons of parts cheap on the web... I have a ton of parts for you to pass safety if you like?  (front and rear signal lights, rear tail light)

best upgrade will be Carbs... but if using stock Carbs get them sonic cleaned... or like I did, soak em in pinesol... like brand new.

when I bought my bike the brakes were seized, but the calipers took 5mins to fix, and clean up.  bought a new master cylinder off fleabay for $80 did not wanna mess around on that.

as for cafe parts, Dime City Cycles has sweet stuff that's reasonably priced.

looking forward to the build, gimme a shout if you need a hand, I'd be more then happy to help on such a sweet ass project.
