So I figured I would start an actual build thread on here. I had one on a different site, but it seems like the discussions on that site tend to be anything but automotive focused. I've been creeping over the past week and this site is actually a breath of fresh air. It seems to be actually automotive themed and populated by enthusiasts. Anyways, on to the important bits:

2013 Subaru BRZ Sport Tech Package 6-Speed

It's strictly a summer vehicle that will hopefully never see snow. Plans thus far started as "just a few little things" but has blossomed into a long wish list. My intentions are to keep the car indefinitely, so I'm in no rush. Just given the nature of the vehicle, if I upgrade a part I want one of the benefits to be reduced weight. The one exception being some type of sound deadener because I'm a bit of an audio snob, and forced induction.

I've been following the FT86 concept since it was announced a few years ago. I was actually extremely bitter that Toyota decided to market it as a Scion in North America. The Subaru/Toyota/Scion are pretty much mechanically identical. I had to go to Subaru Calgary to get the car this past October because Frontier Subaru only had a manual in Silver. I ended up with the Subaru over the Scion due to options and equipment. I've become accustomed to certain creature comforts and the Scion didn't come with Leather/Alcantara seats. Also, with the Scion, in order to get push button start, auto climate, and HID's, you had to get the "10" edition which was a limited numbered edition that only came in Silver, and had gross illuminated logos.

The day I picked up it, Oct 15 2013:

I work for a Toyota dealer in town, so before I went to Calgary, I ordered a TRD Catback exhaust and it was waiting for me when I got home. It's probably one of the easiest installs I've ever done. My brother had the mid-pipe and muffler off before I had my new garage creeper together. I'm not sure how I feel about the TRD exhaust overall. It's the only aftermarket muffler with that shape of tips and I'm not sure if I prefer circle ones. The upside is that the exhaust is one of the quietest of the aftermarket offerings with a nice smooth and deep tone. I'll be installing a header with a cat delete next week, so we'll see how it sounds then.

I told myself I was going to pace myself with mods, but that was a complete lie. Within days, I had my mind up that I needed to take care of some of the bigger items on the list. The wheels/tires were the first to go. Here's a shot of the stockers with the Prius compound tires

The temptation to go with a mad-tyte staggered flushhhhhh setup was pretty great, but I ended up going with a 17x9 square setup at all 4 corners to try and maintain some balance. After some debate and opinion consideration, I ended up with some GramLight 57DR 17x9 +35mm in Gun Blue. They're slightly lighter than stock, but are also a custom offset that will clear big brake kits without issue. (Future planning!). For rubber, on the advice of some other forum members, I went with Continental Extreme Contact DW's in 245/40/17. Second shot is showing the OEM stack of tires vs the new stack of tires.

With the tire order, I also pulled the trigger on what the manufacturer calls a "Stage 1 Suspension upgrade". It's basically lowering springs and front/rear sway bars. The drop is mild at 1", but maintains near stock ride quality. I left the struts OEM for now. I may upgrade them, or might go coil overs down the road. The front and rear sway bars are adjustable, so it will keep my options open. I put about 1000km on the car before storing it, and i'm pleased with the ride quality. Very near OEM, but sharper with less body roll.

The offset and sizing is perfect imo. Wheels are pushed right to the corners without too much poke

Some Perrin parts arrived shortly there after. A brake master cylinder brace and a pulley

I was actually shocked how much room is infront of the engine once you have the stock airbox out. Tons of room to do stuff, or install some forced induction plumbing! The pulley literally took 10 minutes to install, and the master cylinder brace was equally trivial

The next day, my new intake arrived. It's an AFE Takeda dry filter. I also took the time to delete the annoying sound tube. The factory intake has a pipe coming off the main intake that channels sound into the cabin. I capped off the firewall hole, and it sounds so much better without it. It was kind of cool at first, but in the short time I drove the car, I found it annoying.

STi parts in North America are garbage for this car. We literally get a fraction of what's available over seas. I liked the look of the rear spoiler addon from STi Japan, so I ordered it. It's very subtle, but it "finishes" the spoiler in my opinion. It's the flat black rubber looking thing on the end. Here it is installed:

Here's a rear shot of the spoiler add-on and my new vanity plate that just arrived

And that's how the car sits right now. Current parts on order are some Toms JDM tail lights in red, a Borla unequal length header, and some other random small stuff. After that, plans are a full audio system upgrade, sound deadening for the doors and wheel wells, and then who knows. Long term plans are a front and rear big brake kit and an Innovate/Cusco supercharger. I'll update this thread as it progresses. Feel free to share your opinions or if you think something looks stupid :)

Nice progress! What did you use to cap the sound tube hole on the firewall? I notice quite a few people do this and I'm interested in that sound difference it makes.

Canadian tire has some hose end caps in their auto emergency section. One of them fits the grey elbow in the firewall grommet perfectly.
You can get sound tube delete kits that come with caps for the air box side and firewall side., and trd Japan makes a sound tube upgrade kit with the option to block it off completely. If you're really lazy, a 12v cigarette lighter cap also fits perfectly on the inside of the firewall

A couple items arrived today! Header, tails, and I picked up some hella horns while I was at speedfactor

                      Stock:

                      Installed:

The tail lights look much better than stock imo. They are the jdm version and not the US retrofit that has side markers installed by a 3rd party. They are LED, but they came with a new indicator relay to prevent rapid flashing.

The header was easy to install. It took about 30 minutes start to finish once the car was in the air. Here's a shot of the factory header and cat compared to the borla header. The weight savings are huge

The sound is unreal, imo. It's still nice and subtle but has an awesome rumble to it now. Even though I lost the main cat, the TRD exhaust keeps it smooth and rasp-free, if that's even a word.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The tails look good in pictures, but they honestly don't do them justice.

Nhil: I'm still on the fence between OpenFlash and ECUTEK. ECUTEK is way more cash and locked down, but it would be an easy map upgrade if I ever moved to forced induction. The maps with ECUTEK are top notch though, depending on who you buy from. OpenFlash is much less $, but there's just something about open source maps that makes me a little nervous.
