Hey so I'm new to bikes and I'm thinking of buying one. What kind of power and price should I be looking for?

Again man need to wait till the summer but I'm wondering if insurance would be cheaper for a beginner bike licence than a full one?

Aside from merit points, your license stage has nothing to do with the price of insurance.

Nah let your friend sell the bike because I'm in an ongoing war with my parents to get my 6F licence!

I hope you dont mind me jacking your thread a little here.

Im thinking about buying my first sport bike, looking at 2008+ Ninja 250's, I noticed new CBR250's are dirt cheap ($3500). So, by a used Ninja for $2500-3000 or buy a new cbr250 for $4000ish after taxes, etc. I hear thr Ninja is more 'fun' as it has 7hp more which I'm sure makes a huge difference in a 250cc bike. Advice?

They both have their pros and cons.

The Ninja is slightly faster and will repeatedly beat the CBR in a race, that is a fact. The CBR has better fit and finish, is much, MUCH cheaper to repair, and has fuel injection, making starts easy and engine behavior predictable (not that I ever had any problems starting or riding the Ninja, some people just would rather not have to use a choke on cold starts).

The Ninja has all its power up top, and doesn't really get moving til you fly past 5,000 RPM. The CBR being a single cylinder is the opposite, building torque very early and dying off up top. Its an easier "beginner powerband" to manage.

The Ninja has the better gearbox, CBR is still terrific and smooth but notchy in the lower gears. Ninja has analog gauges and no ABS, CBR has ABS available and all digital displays. Ninja doesn't have a coolant temp gauge, CBR does.

Other than that, both are an excellent choice and are bulletproof reliable.

The small bike wars continue, Honda's new CBR300R is faster than the Ninja 300 :P

Lol very informative post but I'm still undecided lol. In either case I'm sure this would be a stepping stone to learn to ride on and then move on to another bike. I dont want to get bored within a few weeks or months of making my purchase, either of the two more 'mod friendly'? If i can tinker with it and have fun for two seasons thatd be ideal. I really like the look of the Vulcan custom 900 but I'm not prepared to spend that $ without even riding a bike.

I started off with a gsxr 600 but sold it within 1 month of getting my license and bought a R1. But if you arent a speed freak and just want a nice bike to cruise for my brother has a great Yamaha R6 for sale.

                                        CBR 1000RR or bust.

On a more srs note, if you are a bigger guy (tall/bulky) I would say take a couple bikes for test drives, im not gunna say that all small bikes are the same but I find the 250's and the "sport bike" that they had a the course to be extremely small and would imagine those bikes feeling awkward for a larger person to ride, and may even be more dangerous because of it.  My first bike was a 600 and never found it to be too overwhelming.

Playing with the insurance calculator for sgi, anything under 500cc is $50-$65 a month as soon as you enter 500cc or higher it jumps up $183+ per month. Still a lot cheaper than mpi so i cannot complain too much.

Yeah for the two times I rode it, it really didn't get more fun than that.

I'm going to purchase this '11 Ninja 250 SE $3,000. Looks to be in good shape, original owner 1,300kms with a few mods. Owner is buying a larger bike. I must say, i'm really excited!
