Well I'm not worried about rebuilding the engine, its not the first engine I've rebuilt, but I'm still not sure if it will fix the problem or at least make it better, what oil do you guys recommend? Is synthetic a good idea? I will probably get that high mileage stuff, but I'm not sure what weight to get, 10w-30, or maybe 10w-40?

If it leaks/burns oil, don't waste your money with synthetic.

does the compression go up when you put a little bit of oil in the cylinder your testing? If you are still planning to rebuild it I would highly recommend reshiming the valves while you have everything apart, The shims are $16.15 each

I've been dealing with toyotas for many many years.
You have the same bs as the early corollas and mr2's.
They had precat issues and had oil ring issues.
The oil ring ports plug up and then you burn it. They only put two oil holes in the piston ring land for drainage which was stupid.
Most guys just try to find a 03+ 1zz as it was revised or go 2zz.
For the cost of a 1zz vs the parts to update, I'd buy an newer 1zz.
Remember the corolla has different rods vs the celica and mr2 spyder 1zz's and that's why they revved lower.

I gotta ask, how did you apply the clear to get it shine like that?  Did you let it get "tacky" then apply a thick coat?

From personal experience: layer clear in thick coats but not thick enough to make it run. Spray first coat, let it dry for 10-15 mins, apply second coat, repeat depending on the number coats you want.

Same here, put enough on that its glossy and wet, but no more, then wait till almost dry, clear again and repeat

Correct me if Im wrong, but are you running two mufflers? or did you simply google this image?
Either way, take it to an exhaust shop, have them cut the stock portion out, and replace it with a pipe. should take less than an hour, and be fairly cheap.
