Christmas present to myself this year will be a good quality camera.  I have always envied good photography and now want to take some of my own.  I absolutely hate point and shoot cameras.

Anyone have a suggestion as to a entry level DSLR?

What features are you looking for? I have a Nikon D7000 and my favorite features are the top LCD screen, in-camera time lapse, and 720p video @ 30fps.

I would recommend using or borrowing a friend's camera to see how you like it, then you can determine if you want an entry level or something higher up. That way you won't be wanting to upgrade after a month, haha

Truth be told, as long as it has manual settings to it any camera is capable of great photography.  You can even manage some great shots with a phone camera when supplied with the right lighting.

Could look into a compact camera system (ie. Micro four thirds cameras), like the Nikon J1, or Olympus PEN.  They're slightly larger than a P&S, but much smaller than an DSLR, and still have the option for interchangeable lenses.

If you're set on a DSLR look into either the Canon T3i, or Nikon D3100.  Go to a store, play with them, see which one you like better, they'll both take fine images, it's more about which menus and button layout you find easiest to work with.

Most importantly is taking the time to read and learn how to use all the options a DSLR will give you.  There are plenty of people out there who buy a DSLR and their photo's don't improve because they just don't know how to use on.

I have a Canon G11, which is slightly bigger than a DSLR and
                            A Nikon D7000 also.

I do use them both, but I use the Nikon more.

Most of my images are either un-touched, or very lightly touched for contrast/brightness
I believe in the natural aspect of taking a photo, and often shoot in film.
