I'll share a few I suppose...  Photography is one of my 3 hobbies :)  The others being cooking and my car.

Here's a couple more from the Philippines when I was there a few years ago:

I am ashamed I don't break out the camera more these days, though.

                      So, new to the hobby.

Here is my first attempt at trying to take pictures. I need to obviously work on steadying my hand, and anything else would be appreciated.

                        Merged with existing thread.

Your shutter speed is too low. You want it at around 1/60 at this focal length, to do this you can crank up your ISO, crank down your aperture to the lowest value (3.5 at 18mm for your 18-70) and you can even play with exposure compensation, especially if you're shooting in RAW.

If you have no idea what I just said I have some nice photography books you can buy ;)

Surprisingly, I do know what you mean. I was playing with the settings last night and reading the book that came with the camera. I never changed anything though, but I will! Thanks bud.

Agreed, for the most part.  I only use S when I know where need my shutter speed has to be for certain shots... aka autocross/hooning/etc.

I still leave it on A. That way I don't waste time trying to get the correct exposure and end up missing the shot!

For the above low light shots, it's important to recognize the scene and subjects are stationary...  A steady hand is great, practice and technique help, but for stationary macro-type shots, just use a tripod.  Simple, yet time-tested and effective.  Keep your ISO relatively low to keep the "noise" down, use an aperture that gives you the focus depth you need for your subject, shutter speed will affect ambient light/colour that ends up in the picture.  You can also use full manual on a controlled shot like that because your subject isn't going anywhere, so it's a good place to practice with all 3 components of your exposures.

Edit: On my above food macro shot, I admit I cheated without using a tripod.  Good light and a stabilized macro lens are wonderful things, and I was too hungry to set it all up :P

DSLR?  Or high-end point n shoot?

If you're looking for an SLR, any of the entry level camera's should serve well, the Canon T3i or the Nikon 3200 can be had with 18-55mm lens for around $550.
