I have a foam gun, and they are great for well-maintained cars, but cars that have any type of dirt that is stuck on well, you're better off just using the regular two-bucket method.

When I detail cars I will foam it down first to release as much surface dirt as possible, and then rinse. Following that rinse, I will use the two-bucket method and go over the whole vehicle.

The foam is also handy if you are someone who likes to do an in-between step after claying and before waxing.

yea I saw this video it gives a good idea how to do the generalized version of a self detail.  he says in his video for cars that have a lot more dirt to use a more heavy duty degreaser, but for what the video covers it give a pretty good idea.
